Home Office Design for Small Spaces

We’re in the heat of a pandemic and designing a cozy home office has never been of this importance. Most of us are now relegated to working from home. Designing a space where you can brainstorm and feel at ease is more of an art than science.

There is a good chance you—like many of us—call your bedroom, kitchen, or living room, a home office. Fret not! We’ve all been there and we know the frustration that comes with trying to concentrate on becoming productive while you’re still curled up on that sweet bed.

In addition to looking good and stylish, a home office is meant to be a space that inspires focus, gives you energy, and most importantly saves you from having to take a break every ten minutes or so. Things have taken a drastic turn and the last thing the world needs right now is workers that are unmotivated, distressed, and fatigued. Scroll through to design yourself a home office that aligns with your lifestyle and personality.

Layout Is Everything

If it happens that you’re particularly tight on space, you’ve got no choice but to be creative! More often than not, your home office consists mainly of a desk, a couch, and a storage cabinet. The trick here is to find the best spot for all of them. If you happen to have a window in your room—use it to your advantage! How? Instead of putting your desk by the wall, put it in front of the window. The extra space by the wall is where the couch should go, but understandably, not all couches fit perfectly the way we intend them to.

If this is true in your case and if you’re having trouble filling the corners, opt for an L shaped sofa as they’re more accommodating than your average couch and you’re no longer worried about putting another piece of furniture in the corner.

Flexible Furniture

As much as we’d like it to be, not every day we feel at our best, and some days we just don’t feel like going back to the same desk, and on the same chair!

For this reason, it is prudent to invest in pieces of furniture that are flexible in nature. Instead of having two chairs in your room—which, let’s be honest, you might never use one of them—get yourself an adjustable stool.

This will add substance to your room’s décor and since their height is easily altered, you can easily match it with your desk’s height. Do this and say goodbye to bad posture once and for all.

Use Your Wall

Understandably, once you put all the pieces in their space, you feel as though you need more space. This is because you haven’t fully taken advantage of your walls.

Your wall is a huge asset if you know how to use it. You’re lacking storage space? Worry not! Install a wall storage unit and save yourself the trouble of squeezing in all your belongings inside your cabinet.

You’re lacking tackable panels? Fix a bulletin board onto the wall and you’ll see that brainstorming has never been easier.

Have Better Breaks

At the end of the day, we’re human and we’re highly susceptible to boredom and zoning out every now and then. To help combat this, it is imperative that you enjoy your office and that you have proper measures in place for getting the most out of your break sessions.

What better way to achieve this than by investing in a desk-side cabinet? Stocking your side-cabinet with coffee and tea supplies is the dream of every caffeine addict! Remember the adjustable stool we recommended previously? Bring that gem near your cabinet, adjust the height, and fix yourself that well-deserved cup of coffee.

Work Smarter

Instead of investing in pieces that have single functions, search for those essentials that have hidden extras. Instead of the usual overhead lighting, opt for task lighting. Your office—even after rearranging your furniture—feels suffocating and unlivable? Bring color into your office and have your mindset altered in a blink of an eye.

At our very core, we’re nothing but creatures of habit. When we’re given no choice but to work from home, it is then our responsibility to make do with what we have in store. Designing your office room might seem hard at times but then so is having to work in a room that constantly puts you at unease. Keep in mind that the same design that works for your friend might not work for you. People have different preferences and the best way to find what clicks for you and what doesn’t is to actually go ahead and try out different arrangements and see what best aligns with your needs.
